Birthmark Removal Procedure

Birthmarks are stains on your skin that appear at birth or shortly afterwards. Sometimes they are small and remain unnoticed, but sometimes they can be conspicuous and large. In the latter case you may feel uncomftable with your look and have a low self-esteem.

There are few kinds of bithmarks: Pigmented birthmarks also called congenital nevi or moles which may have some precancerous potential; Mongolian spots which are blue-green spots usually found in children and disappear as they grow older; and Coffee-cream spots which caused by to many pigment and usually pose only cosmetic problems. Macular stains, also called salmon patches, usually appear on babies and disappear later in life, except those found on the neck. Abnormal blood vessels create stains which are called Port wine stains. Those do not disappear during life and are especially concerning when appearing around the eyes. Hemangiomas are vascular tumors of many tiny blood vessels, which grow early in life around the head and neck. Many of them disappear after a few months but others may take years to disappear.

There are few methods by which a birthmark is removed. That depends largely on their size, type and location.

Laser therapy is one of the methods used, especially for superficial skin lesions. Laser energy targeted at a specific location causes the skin to fade and become lighter. In a case of port wine stain the laser makes it smaller and prevents from growing further. Laser treatments can be performed at any age, but sometimes several treatments are required.

Surgery is another method used for birthmarks, which cannot be removed by using laser. One example is hemangioma which is too large.

Laser treatment may take from several minutes to an hour, depending on the size of birthmarks. There is very little pain associated with the laser procedure. You may feel a mild burning sensation. Small children, or people sensitive to pain, may receive anesthetics. After the procedure has been completed, the skin is dark purple, and should improve after 7-10 days. Complete healing takes up to 6 weeks, during which you should avoid rubbing the place and exposing it to direct sun.

Every procedure has its risks. This one include pigmentation changes, resulting in areas of dark skin with bright patches. Such can be treated by additional laser treatments. Scar formation may also occur, where it can be treated by skin grafting. Other complications, such as bleeding or infection, are relatively rare.

  • Australia Customs and quarantine

Australia has a very strict customs requirement when it comes to animal and vegetable imports including wood, and other prohibited goods. This is because Australia is a large and isolated island, and thus far free of many diseases and insect pests found in other countries. All incoming visitors must pass a customs check for these items. No fruits, vegetables, meat or other food products are allowed in unless they are factory-made and on the approved list of imports (for example, chocolate is acceptable).

There is no penalty for declaring most goods that are prohibited from import - they'll just be confiscated and destroyed or held in quarantine - but if you attempt to bring them in without declaring them, there are extremely heavy penalties including fines (in the order of thousands of dollars) and a possible jail term. It is far safer to declare any items that only might be prohibited, if they are not then you will suffer no consequence.

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service website [1] has more details.

  • Australia Geography

Australia is the world's smallest continent but sixth-largest country; it's slightly smaller than the 48 contiguous United States. The highly urbanised population is heavily concentrated along the eastern and south-eastern coasts. Australia is bordered on the northwest, west, and southwest by the Indian Ocean, and on the east by the South Pacific Ocean. The Tasman Sea lies to the southeast, while the Great Barrier Reef lies to the northeast. Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Indonesia are Australia's northern neighbors, separated from Australia by the Arafura Sea and the Timor Sea.

Australia is mostly arid and semi-arid: the center is desert and much agricultural land is poor quality by the standards of continents with richer soil. The south east is temperate and the north tropical. Australia was massively deforested for agricultural purposes: forest areas survive in extensive national parks and some other areas. Australia is prone to severe drought and water restrictions are currently in place in some areas, however these shouldn't affect travellers as they mostly relate to watering gardens and washing cars.

Plastic Surgery News...

  • At the moment in Canada a General Practitioner can advertise himself/herself as a cosmetic surgeon, even though he/she is not a certified surgeon - two new rules changes have been approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) which stop this. The new rule changes will make it much more likely that a patient who wants cosmetic surgery with a trained professional will be able to do so.

  • Objectives  To describe the clinical features of cutaneous and ocular manifestations of childhood rosacea, to propose diagnostic criteria, and to emphasize the possible severity of ocular complications in this age group.

    Design  Retrospective study.

    Setting  Tertiary referral center.

Patients  Children aged 1 to 15 years who had received a diagnosis of cutaneous and/or ocular rosacea and were seen between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2005.

Results  Of 20 patients, 11 had ocular and cutaneous rosacea, 6 had isolated cutaneous involvement, and 3 had isolated ocular involvement. Dermatologic examination results were sufficient to diagnose rosacea in 12 of the patients (60%). The most common presentation was a papulopustular eruption on a telangiectatic background. In 11 patients (55%), ocular involvement preceded the skin eruption. Among the ophthalmologic manifestations, chalazions and blepharoconjunctivitis were the main presenting symptoms; keratitis was observed in 4 patients and corneal ulcers in 2. Ten patients were treated with oral metronidazole. Intermittent treatment for at least 3 months was used to avoid neurologic toxic effects and to achieve complete remission.

Conclusion  Although rare, childhood rosacea should be recognized because of the possible severity of ocular involvement.
