Breast Lift Procedure
A mastopexy or breast lift is a surgical procedure performed to reshape the breast and return it to a more youthful position. Drooping of the breast may occur after pregnancy as well as aging. Frequently a breast implant may be used in conjunction with a breast lift in order to achieve better results. Depending on the amount of breast lifting that needs to be accomplished, different techniques may be used that involve different incisions. Generally, the more lifting that is required, the larger the incision (and therefore the scar).

- The Journal of the American Medical Association has published a review on the management of acute pain crisis in a patient with advanced cancer. The review starts with a case vignette to illustrate the problem, and defines a pain crisis as an event in which the patient reports severe, uncontrolled pain that is causing the patient, family, or both severe distress. The pain may be acute in onset or may have progressed gradually to an intolerable threshold (as determined by the patient), but requires immediate intervention. Additionally, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network pain management guidelines identify a pain emergency as an event in which patients have severe pain (a numerical estimate of at least 7 on a 10-point scale) that requires rapid opioid titration to provide analgesia.
With respect to pharmacological interventions, the review discusses and makes recommendations for the principles of opioid selection for the management of pain, managing a pain crisis with parenteral opioids in patients currently receiving opioid therapy, use of adjuvant co-analgesic medications, and the use of methadone in pain crisis management.
- Behavioral experiments indicate that infants aged 4 ½ months or older possess an early "number sense" that allows them to detect changes in the number of objects. However, the neural basis of this ability was previously unknown.
