Correction of Breast Asymmetry Procedure


A slight breast asymmetry is very common, when the asymmetry is very remarkable you might want to correct the asymmetry. The correction can be done either by augmentation of the smaller breast or reduction of the large one. The decision between the options is made together with the surgeon, depending on your anatomy and the degree of asymmetry.

You should be above age 18, not nursing or pregnant and in good general health to undergo the correction.

If you're going through the augmentation procedure, the surgeon will make the incision in your armpit, around the nipple or under the breast fold. Then he'll separate the skin from the breast tissue in order to insert the implants. The insertion can be above or below the chest muscles. Most of the implants today are filled with silicon and come in different sizes and shapes.

The reduction procedure involves a vertical incision from the nipple down and a horizontal incision below the breast fold. The extra fat is removed using a liposuction and the breast size is adjusted to the other one.

The length of each procedure depends on the degree of asymmetry and procedure technique. After the surgery you'll have bandages around your chest, sometimes a drainage tube is also placed to avoid blood and fluid collection. Breast augmentation stretches the tissue, therefore there may be a significant amount of pain after the surgery, especially during the first 48 hours. Painkiller antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs are often prescribed.

Breast reduction involves a larger scar but it goes through less sensitive areas, therefore the pain is less and can be easily treated with painkillers.

Every procedure has its risks. Augmentation may result is implant contraction, rupture of the filling, the implant may move and nipple sensation may be lost. Reduction is usually safe, but can cause bleeding, infection and delayed healing.

Expect to feel tired and sore during the first 48-72 hours. You'll be able to go to work after a week or so, but you should avoid strenuous activities for up to 6 weeks. Complete recovery usually takes 2 month. Until then expect that your scars will be pink and sensitive for 6 weeks, then they'll begin to fade. It is normal for your breasts to be swollen for 3-4 weeks.

    The official language of Portugal is Portuguese. Although it's somewhat related to Spanish, Italian, and other Romantic languages, it's not identical. If the traveler attempts to speak Portuguese with locals, the action is taken with respect and oftentimes the local will apologize for how "difficult" it is to learn Portuguese, or how "hard" the language is. This good favor might encourage travelers to learn the very basics of Portuguese, such as daily greetings and the routine "please-thank you" exchanges.

    Almost all major full price airlines fly to Portugal (British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa), besides the country's own TAP Portugal.   • According to research published in Pediatrics, fluconazole prophylaxis for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) newborns can reduce the incidence of invasive candidiasis and related mortality in NICUs without causing fluconazole-resistant Candida species Researchers evaluated the impact of fluconazole prophylaxis for ELBW infants on invasive candidiasis incidence, invasive candidiasis-related mortality rates, and fluconazole susceptibility of Candida isolates. ELBW (401 to 1000 g) infants were eligible if they were younger than 5 days of age and did not have liver failure. Some non-ELBW infants were also given fluconazole if they were considered to be at risk for invasive candidiasis, and fluconazole was given intravenously at a dose of 3 mg/kg at various intervals for up to 6 weeks. NICU infants (all birth weights) with invasive candidiasis between April 2002 and March 2006 were compared with those with invasive candidiasis before fluconazole prophylaxis (2000-2001). The following results were reported for the target ELBW infants: • Invasive candidiasis incidence in NICU infants decreased from 0.6% (19 of 3012 infants) before fluconazole prophylaxis to 0.3% (22 of 6393 infants) in 2002-2006 (p=0.05) and that in extremely low birth weight infants decreased 3.6-fold (from 7.3% to 2%; P = 0 .003). • Invasive candidiasis-related mortality rate decreased from 2% to 0% (P =0.01), and the all-cause mortality rate decreased from 19% (54 of 3012 infants) to 15% P =0.13). • The invasive candidiasis species distribution remained stable. The researchers also conclude that this study demonstrates that fluconazole prophylaxis should be considered in NICUs caring for infants with BWs of less than 1000g or less than 750g, and infants who have significant ongoing risk factors, in a manner that limits total fluconazole exposure.
  • Researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center have discovered biomarkers that predict which patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer will respond to a combination treatment of the anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex and the growth factor receptor blocker Tarceva.
