Ear Surgery Procedure

The surgery called otoplasty and it is targeted to correct protruding or large outer ears. It is usually done in children ages 4-14. The ear reaches it's final size around ages 4-6 and therefore it is better to perform the surgery at a younger age to avoid unnecessary suffering. Additional conditions which can be corrected are "lop ear" in which the upper ear is folded and leans forward, "cupped ear" in which the outer ears are unusually small and "shell ear" in which there is flattening of the folds resulting in a shell like ear. Long, short or torn ear lobes also can be fixed. This operation can repair congenital ear defects and make reconstruction of the outer ear after trauma.

The operation usually lasts between 1-3 hours; more complex procedures may last even longer. A cut is made behind the ear, making it invisible, to allow excess to ear cartilage. Then the surgeon will design the cartilage using cuts and sutures to get the desired shape. Sometimes non-absorbable stitches are used in order to create fold, those stitches will be under the skin and there is no need to remove them. A few surgeons prefer to make the cut in front of the ear and hide the scar behind the skin folds. In most of the cases the scar fades with time and is hardly seen. Both ears can be corrected in the same operation.

For younger children general anesthesia is preferred, for cooperative adults it can be done using local anesthetics and sedative drugs. Every operation has its risk. There is risk of blood clots under the scar area which usually absorb after few days; otherwise there is a need to drain then. There is a risk of infection involving the ear cartilage which can leave a scar. Those infection can be treated successfully with antibiotics in most of the cases and rarely require surgical drainage.

After the surgery a majority of the adults can return to their homes, young children usually left overnight for observation. The ears are bandaged with a bandage around the head to prevent bleeding and preserve the final shape. The ears will be swollen and painful for a couple of days. It is advised to avoid any activities that can harm the ears for about a month. Children should pay extra attention while playing. You shouldn't sleep on the repaired ear for about 7-10 days

  • India History

Indians date their history from the Vedic Period. This is the period when the Vedas, the oldest and holiest books of Hinduism, were compiled. There is a great dispute for last 150 years, over dating of Vedic period based on Aryan Invasion Theory which claims that vedic people came from Europe / Central Asia and spread their language & culture among ancient Indians. The earliest archaeological traces are from archeological findings of 7000 BC Mehrgarh, Balochistan , Pakistan which growed in advanced, planned urban towns of " Indus Valley Civilization" that peaked around 3300 BC before declining and disintegrating around 1900 BC, possibly due to a drought & geological disturbances. The excavations reveal an extremely advanced urban civilization, with no evidence of weapons or fortifications.

The Vedic civilization influences India to this day. The roots of present-day Hinduism lie in them. Some rituals of Hinduism took shape during that period. Most North-Indian languages come from Sanskrit, the language of the Vedas. These languages together with Sanskrit are members of the Indo-European group of languages. In the 1st millennium BC, various schools of thought in philosophy developed, enriching Hinduism greatly. Most of them claimed to derive from the Vedas. However, two of these schools - Buddhism and Jainism - questioned the authority of the Vedas and they are now recognized as separate religions.

  • India Climate

In India, it rains only during a specific time of the year. The season as well as the phenomenon that causes it is called the monsoon. There are two of them, the Southwest and the Northeast, both named after the directions the winds come from. The Southwest monsoon is the more important one, as it causes rains over most parts of the country, and is the crucial variable that decides how the crops (and therefore the economy) will do. It lasts from June to September. It hits the west coast the most, as crossing the western ghats and reaching the rest of India is an uphill task for the winds. The western coastline is therefore much greener than the interior. The Northeast monsoon hits the east coast between October and February, mostly in the form of occasional cyclones which cause much devastation every year. The only region that gets rains from both monsoons is Northeastern India, which consequently experiences the highest rainfall in the world.

  • Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceuticals has written to UK healthcare professionals informing them of a shortage in supplies of Kenalog™ (triamcinolone acetonide) pre-filled syringe 40mg/ml (1ml and 2ml). This is due to global shortages on syringe packaging components. The company will not be able to meet current customer demand and it does not currently know how long this stock shortage will last. As a result, it is advising that use of remaining stock is prioritised for patients who are unable to receive any other treatment, and alternative treatment options considered for other patients. However Kenalog 1ml (40mg) x 5 vials remains available as this is not a pre-filled syringe presentation. For further information, contact customer services on 01244 586250.

  • Onchocerciasis is an infection caused by Onchocerca volvulus, a parasite nematode worm transmitted to humans by a species of black fly of the Simulium genus whose larvae develop in fast-flowing rivers.
