Hair Transplant in Ottawa Canada

Hair loss is caused by a combination of ageing, hormonal changes and a genetic history of baldness.  The earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness.  It can also be caused by trauma, or burns, whereas this surgery is considered reconstructive.

Procedure Types

Hair Transplantation - The procedure consists of resurfacing bald areas of scalp with hair.  Plugs of bald scalp are removed and then filled with plugs of scalp containing several hair roots taken from hair-bearing areas.  Those grafts root themselves into their new locations and hair follicles start to grow eventually.

Depending on the degree of baldness, the number of grafts needed and the length of treatment sessions vary.  Several operations may be necessary.  The technique may leave many small scars on the site used (donor sites) but are usually not noticeable.

Scalp Flap Transfer – This is done when the sides of the scalp (above the ears) and the back of the scalp is hair-bearing.  A long thin "flap" of scalp that is hair-bearing is removed and placed across a bald section to create a band of normal hair growth.  As part of the treatment, parts of the bald scalp may be removed.  The donor site is closed by stretching the opposite side of the scalp.
This procedure replaces hair across a large area of bald scalp.  The hair growth looks normal, and the narrow scars are hidden between the hair follicles.

Scalp Reduction (Serial Excision) – This is the removal of as much of the bald section as possible and done in the first operation.  The adjacent hair bearing areas of scalp are pulled in close to the bald section, with the understanding that some bald areas will remain.  This technique is repeated one or more times at a later date to eventually reconstruct the bald area.

Tissue Expansion – A device called a tissue expander is placed under a hair growth area situated adjacent to a bald area.  After several weeks, the tissue expander causes skin to grow new skin cells.  Then another operation is necessary to place the newly expanded skin over the ajoining bald area.

Ideal candidates for hair replacement must have a healthy growth of hair at the back and sides of the head.  The hair on the back and sides of the head will be the donor sites where the flaps and grafts will be surgically removed.

The procedure  location options may include the surgeon's office-based surgical facility, outpatient surgery center, hospital outpatient, or hospital in patient.

The anesthetic options are either general, or local (combined with a sedative)which allows the patient to remain awake but relaxed.

To achieve desired fullness, several surgical sessions are needed.  There is a healing period of several months  recommended between each session. The final result with a full transplant series may take up to 2 years.

A month or 2 after surgery, the grafted hair falls out (which is normal and temporary).  It takes another month or more before hair growth starts.  To create more natural-looking results, a surgical touch-up procedure may be necessary.  This may consist of using a combination of mini grafts or slit grafts to fill and blend in the hairline.

  • Ottawa By car
Parking at most attractions is convenient, though on-street parking in downtown areas is sometimes at a premium. If you are driving to downtown on the weekend, parking is free in the garage at the World Exchange Plaza. There are entrances to the garage on both Metcalfe Street and Laurier Street. A map is useful if you are going to be driving around downtown as many of the streets are one-way and more than one visitor has complained about navigating the downtown core.

Most major car rental companies have several offices in Ottawa with all of them represented downtown and at the airport.

If you enjoy the outdoors, especially if you are a cyclist, you should definitely visit Gatineau Park just across the river from Ottawa. Bicycles can be rented during the summer months at the northeast corner of the Chateau Laurier. Ottawa and the surrounding area boasts over 170km of public paved trails on which you can run, bike, walk or rollerblade. These trails extend throughout Ottawa, to the Quebec side of the Ottawa River and lead all the way to Gatineau Park and beyond. In addition, many of these trails pass by some of Canada's most famous political and civic landmarks, making running or biking an excellent way to see the city.

Plastic Surgery News...

  • No more vexing problem in education exists today than the achievement gap in this country. The difference between the extremes has rightfully attracted national attention, and one of the most popular policy proposals is to reduce class size - not surprising, since benchmarks are easily measured.

  • Context  The erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) erythropoietin and darbepoetin are licensed to treat chemotherapy-associated anemia in patients with nonmyeloid malignancies. Although systematic overviews of trials have identified venous thromboembolism (VTE) risks, none have identified mortality risks with ESAs.

Objective  To evaluate VTE and mortality rates associated with ESA administration for the treatment of anemia among patients with cancer.

Data Sources  A published overview from the Cochrane Collaboration (search dates: January 1, 1985-April 1, 2005) and MEDLINE and EMBASE databases (key words: clinical trial, erythropoietin, darbepoetin, and oncology), the public Web site of the US Food and Drug Administration and ESA manufacturers, and safety advisories (search dates: April 1, 2005-January 17, 2008).

Study Selection  Phase 3 trials comparing ESAs with placebo or standard of care for the treatment of anemia among patients with cancer.

Data Extraction  Mortality rates, VTE rates, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted by 3 reviewers from 51 clinical trials with 13 611 patients that included survival information and 38 clinical trials with 8172 patients that included information on VTE.

Data Synthesis  Patients with cancer who received ESAs had increased VTE risks (334 VTE events among 4610 patients treated with ESA vs 173 VTE events among 3562 control patients; 7.5% vs 4.9%; relative risk, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.31-1.87) and increased mortality risks (hazard ratio, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.01-1.20).

Conclusions  Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent administration to patients with cancer is associated with increased risks of VTE and mortality. Our findings, in conjunction with basic science studies on erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptors in solid cancers, raise concern about the safety of ESA administration to patients with cancer.
